Exploring Indochina: Ta Som Guesthouse (Review)

After being on the road for 13 hours, we finally arrived at the Mekong Express terminal in Siem Reap where our tuk-tuk driver was already waiting for us.

It was dark in that vicinity and most establishments we passed by were already closed. But as soon as we reached the National Highway, we were amazed by the huge and classy hotels that lined the highway.

The tuk-tuk ride took about 10-15 minutes from the terminal, and as soon as we arrived at the guesthouse, we were served banana shakes as welcome drink. The manager, Mr. Mang Meng, whom I was in correspondence with was not there that night but his staff were well aware of the package we agreed to, and so we settled everything upon check-in.

The lobby was simple yet spacious and well-kept. Although WiFi is available throughout the guesthouse, three desktop computers in the lobby are also available for use from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm. They also have a garden restaurant where breakfast is served from 7:00 am to 10:00 am.

Even though I reserved for a double room for 3 nights, they gave us a triple room. We could have slept in a different bed each night. haha The room may not be as modern as that of Bich Duyen's but it was spacious and comfortable enough.
The basic ensuite bathroom. In fairness, they have a water heater and bidet!

It was already 10:00 pm and we haven't had dinner yet so we headed out to look for a place to eat. Good thing few roadside eateries were still open.

Beef Loklak for $3 -_-
While they do accept Riel (KHR) for payment, everything is priced in US dollars. Yes, even tuk-tuk rides!

After dinner, we headed back to the guesthouse to get some much needed rest since we had to get up early the following day for the Angkor sunrise!

***
I know most travelers to Siem Reap choose to stay in Bou Savy, so I wanted to try other options. Besides, for the package they gave me, I couldn't complain.

For $41* per head, we got the following (customized):
  • Triple room (air conditioned) with ensuite bathroom for 3 nights with daily breakfast
  • Pick-up and transfer from bus station to guesthouse
  • Welcome drink and cold towel upon check-in
  • Fruit platter upon arrival
  • Mineral water (1 bottle per person per day)
  • Tuk-tuk for whole day Angkor tour (8 hours)
  • English speaking tour guide (8 hours)
  • Angkor sunrise and sunset
*Angkor temple pass not included

PROS: They have several breakfast options (all served with coffee or tea and fruits); Caltex is just beside the guesthouse; Angkor Archaeological Park is just 10 minutes away; free tuk-tuk ride to Old Market (5 minutes away | 10-15 minutes by foot); soap and shampoo were provided; being a Capitol tour branch office, I was also able to book us bus seats to Bangkok; souvenir :D

Stir fried noodles with egg - my breakfast for two days straight. On the first day I had omelet with bread and jam.

CONS (minor): It takes some time for the aircon to cool the room; the TV has limited English channels; the room only has a 'makeshift' cabinet; I don't know why but the beds were too high; towels were not changed daily (I think you have to request for it)

I only arranged everything with Mr. Meng via email. He responds quickly and was very patient in responding to my inquiries. I also believe he gave us a very good deal. :) The attentive and courteous staff were also commendable.

  4. Hi Bert, we also booked the bus to Bangkok with Ta Som Guesthouse. It's only $8 per person.

Yes, I think 2 days in Siem Reap is enough. We did the small circuit in one day i.e. sunrise at Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom (Bayon, Baphuon, Phimeanakas, Terrace of the Leper King & Terrace of the Elephants), Banteay Kdei, Ta Prohm and sunset at Phnom Bakheng. On our second day, we just explored the town e.g. old market, Pub Street, watched the Apsara show, and night market. These will be my next blog entries so please watch out for it. :)
