Best Places to Visit for Street Art

Seeing masterpieces by Rembrandt, Monet, van Gogh, Picasso et al can be a once in a lifetime experience for many. But going to museums usually take a big chunk off a traveler’s budget.

Today, art is no longer confined in the four corners of a building. More and more formal and freestyle artists take their art to the streets so that more people can appreciate them.

With the help of my friends, I compiled a list of best places to visit for street art.

Penang, Malaysia

This UNESCO World Heritage town have quirky yet functional wrought iron street markers. If you take the time to read the text on the caricatures, you’ll find that they’re both informative and entertaining.

Next, head on to Armenian Street to check out murals by Ernest Zacharevic. He often marries his murals with real-life objects, and the results are larger than life.

Melaka, Malaysia

Another Malaysian city with amazing street art is Melaka.

The murals pay homage to Malaysia’s ethnic diversity as there are Malay, Chinese, and Indian-themed murals.

Walk along the riverside, or better yet, take the Melaka River Cruise to view the murals adorning homes and guesthouses.

Aside from hip bars and cafes, independent boutiques, and vintage shops, there’s also no shortage of murals in Singapore‘s Haji Lane.

Melbourne, Australia

Gone are the days when graffiti was considered vandalism. Today, tourists flock to places like Hosier Lane to check out street art such as the ones pictured below.

The colors are so vibrant and register well in photos. They must have used quality flame spray paint.

Prague, Czech Republic

Lennon Wall – What started out as an outlet for free speech in communist Czechoslovakia has turned into a memorial for John Lennon and his hope for peace.

Prague is also home to various forms of urban art which is another reason why I love this city!

I was even fortunate to catch last year’s Signal Festival where light art is projected onto Prague’s public spaces.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Dubai’s residential area–also famous for bargain shopping–was given a facelift by 24 murals by commissioned artists. The developer hopes it will attract tourists in the area.

Florence, Italy

If you feel like you’re already suffering from ‘museum fatigue’ in Florence, don’t fret. There’s still plenty of art to see even by just walking around.
